Hypoglycemia can be a problem in teacup puppies In Toy Breeds, Hunting Dogs and Puppies
Just like people puppies need to
have sugar in their blood to
supply the body and brain with
the fuel it needs to work
properly and efficiently. In
some breeds, particularly the
toy dogs such as Chihuahuas,
Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians
and Maltese hypoglycemia can be
a problem in adult dogs that
simply don't have enough body
fat to carry their blood sugar
between meals. Most of these
small breeds have a significant
drop in blood sugar that can
trigger hypoglycemia if fasting
for more than eight hours.
Please make sure that the Teacup
Maltese puppy does not skip
meals. Remember that Teacup Maltese puppies need to have food and water close to them as puppies. Once they are older dogs then you can feed them twice a day. Be careful on a new Teacup Maltese puppy. When you purchase a Teacup Maltese puppy please make sure that he is eating well. If you see that the teacup maltese is not eating like he should here are some tips that you can follow. 1. You can purchase chicken and rice or turkey and rice baby food. You can feed the puppy 1/3 of the bottle every four hours. This all depends on the Teacup Maltese puppy's weight. This is typically an approximate dosage for a puppy that is 1 - 3 lbs. Please consult the breeder, seller or your veterinarian for the correct food intake. Continue to hand feed the teacup Maltese puppy until he is eating well. Once he starts to eat on his own then you can gradually reduce the hand feeding food. Make sure that he is eating well before you stop the hand feeding all together. Teacup Maltese puppies are not problematic but you do need to pay attention to their meals.
